Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb raw calamari rings
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup frying oil
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs

Instructions

  • Drain and pat the calamari rings dry, and place them in a bowl.
    1/2 lb raw calamari rings
  • In a seperate bowl, mix flour, salt and garlic powder. Coat each ring evenly with the flour mixture.
1 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 tsp salt
  • Dip each ring into beaten egg with a pinch of salt.
    1 egg
  • In a separate bowl, dredge each ring in panko breadcrumbs, ensuring they are fully coated.
    1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Heat about 1 inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the calamari rings and fry for 3–4 minutes, flipping once, until the coating turns golden yellow or light orange.
    1 cup frying oil
  • Remove the crispy fried calamari rings and place them in a large bowl with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  • Serve the calamari rings with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

    • Dry Before You Fry: Patting the rings dry ensures the coating sticks and crisps.
    • Don’t Crowd the Pan: Fry in small batches to keep the oil temperature steady.
    • Use Fresh Oil: Using old oil can make the rings greasy instead of light and crispy. For best results, use fresh oil - avocado or extra virgin olive oil, both work well.
    • Golden Clues: Look for that light orange hue—it's your signal they’re perfectly cooked.
    • Try Lemon: A quick squeeze of lemon brings out the seafood flavor beautifully.
