2 Recipes to Enjoy

Flavored sugars aren’t just easy to make but also fun to experiment with. These two recipes highlight how versatile and delicious they can be.

Mexican Mocha Sugar

Adjust the chili powder to your heat preference, and enjoy the balance of sweet, rich, and spicy flavors. This versatile blend can transform everyday treats into flavor delights.

You’ll need the following ingredients:

• 1 cup granulated sugar.
• 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder.
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
• 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder.
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla powder or the seeds from half a vanilla bean.
• 1/4 teaspoon chili powder, such as ancho chili powder, or adjust to taste.

In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon, espresso powder, vanilla powder, and chili powder, stirring well until all ingredients are evenly distributed. Store the mixture in an airtight container for future use.

This flavorful mixture can be used in several ways. Stir it into your coffee or hot chocolate to create a spicy mocha flavor. You can also sprinkle it on baked goods like brownies or cookies to enhance their sweetness with a touch of spice. Additionally, add it to whipped cream or frostings for a unique twist.

Cinnamon-Orange Sugar

This blend combines the warmth of cinnamon with the brightness of orange for a versatile, aromatic sugar mix. You will find so many uses for this sugar.

You’ll need the following ingredients:

• 1 cup granulated sugar.
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
• 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest.
• Optional, for a warmer hint: 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg.

In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar, cinnamon, orange zest, and nutmeg, if using, and mix thoroughly until the zest is evenly distributed throughout the mixture. Once combined, spread the mixture on a baking sheet and allow it to air dry for about an hour, stirring occasionally to prevent clumping. After drying, transfer the blend to an airtight container for storage.

Sprinkle it over oatmeal, pancakes, or waffles for a sweet boost to your breakfast. Stir it into tea, coffee, or hot cider to add a cozy touch to your drinks. You can also use it as a finishing touch for sugar cookies or pie crusts to give them an extra layer of flavor and texture.
